 Even
off the links, Kiawah and neighboring islands offer a wealth of adventures.
Rated as one of the top tennis resorts in the country by Tennis Magazine,
Kiawah boasts two state-of-the-art tennis centers and a wide array of
teaching programs. Located at East
Beach and West Beach,
the facilities feature composition courts, hard courts and lighted courts
for nighttime play. Kiawah Island's 10-mile beach slopes gently into the
surf, making it an ideal spot for swimming, boogyboarding, and sunbathing.
The hard-packed sand is perfect for jogging or biking, and connects to
30 miles of paved bike trails that crisscross the island. The 21-acre Night Heron Park features basketball courts, volleyball
courts, soccer fields, a nature center and a fitness trail complete with
cardio and strength training stations.
Kiawah
and the neighboring islands are extremely kid friendly, offering a wide
array of recreation programs for the whole family. The Kamp Kiawah program
at Kiawah Island Golf Resort* features a diverse menu of activities
for children ages three to eleven. "Theme days" include arts and crafts,
face painting, scavenger hunts and field games. The resort also offers
programs geared towards teens, such as photo scavenger hunts, volleyball
and basketball. Programs for the whole family include birding and crabbing
tours, outdoor concerts in Night Heron Park, and sand
sculpture contests. *Kiawah Island Golf Resort is a trademark of the
Riverstone Group and is not affiliated with ResortQuest.
Just
a short drive from the historic city of Charleston lies the beautiful
island of Kiawah, a privately gated beachfront resort community. Carefully
designed to preserve the island's semitropical beauty, Kiawah Island's
collection of privately owned homes, villas
and cottages blend artfully with the natural landscape. The island's
10-mile beach, expanse of maritime forest and sweeping sand dunes take
center stage. Visitors flock to Kiawah for a serene and uncrowded retreat
where they're apt to spot any number of deer, osprey, great blue heron
and loggerhead turtles. Kiawah's environmentally sensitive design simultaneously
provides guests and residents with a variety of shops and restaurants.
Just outside the Kiawah entry, Freshfields Village and Bohicket Marina & Yacht Club offer an assortment
of boutiques, restaurants and convenience services, plus loads of family
entertainment.
 With
several stunning courses designed by a veritable who's who of industry
heavyweights, Kiawah has staked its claim in the golf world as a world-class
destination. The Jack Nicklaus-designed Turtle Point is ranked as one of the top-10 courses in the state and has hosted several
important championships, including the Carolinas Amateur and the 1990
PGA Cup Matches. The Pete Dye-designed Ocean Course hosted
the 1991 Ryder Cup, the 1997 World Cup, the 2003 World Cup Championship and will host the PGA Championship in 2012.
Even non-golfers might recognize the Ocean Course from its big screen
debut in The Legend of Bagger Vance. With panoramic ocean views
on most holes, it is known as one of the country's most beautiful and
demanding rounds of golf.
